China's relationship to Tibet is controversial and somewhat tragic. I'm not familiar with all the issues so I'll wait to post more until I understand this controversy, but I think China is basically occupying the country of Tibet under the pretense that it belongs to China, where I think most of the population of Tibet want's to be independent of China.

The Dalai Lama is generally recognized outside of China as the most important representative of the Tibetan people.
